Option Two – The alternative option – Keep Aurora Energy
Further comment
I urge the Council to retain the ownership of Aurora Energy. The power distribution network is a crucial infrastructure – one of the basic needs of the community. Privatisation of such a public asset would have a long-term detrimental effect on community wellbeing, be it an increased power price, poor maintenance, less reliable network). We, ratepayers and consumers, will have no choice as to which network carries their power. It seems foolish to expect for a private investor, with a short-term gain focus, to prioritise long-term community wellbeing over profit to shareholders. The risk of loss of control over such an important asset is simply too great to take. By retaining its ownership, the Council can remain in the position to ensure that ratepayers are not subject to the likely financial burden. It is also essential to retain the ownership as we are living in an ever-changing environment. The control of the asset enables the city to plan for and build a more climate-resilient network. If something must be sold to alleviate the debt crisis, a sale of other non-essential assets like commercial buildings and the stadium should be considered instead.
