Option Two – The alternative option – Keep Aurora Energy
Further comment
I am against the sale of Aurora because it will always be a valuable asset to the city and will only grow in value. Aurora should not be borrowing to pay dividends under any circumstances. It might be unfortunate that Council will be unlikely to receive dividends in the near future and will have to look elsewhere for income, but the longer term view is one where Aurora will gradually be able to pay down its debt and be able to pay dividends to Council thereby benefiting ratepayers. It is shortsighted to sell off such a valuable asset for short term gain.
However, if it is decided to sell Aurora as a result of strong public opinion in favour of that course of action, my view is that the fund for investment should be placed in a trust and the income used for the benefit of supporting cultural and sporting clubs and perhaps educational scholarships for Dunedin permanent residents. This would enable clubs in particular to have a source of income that had not been raised through gaming i.e. gambling. It should not be used as a means to offset rates.
