Option Two – The alternative option – Keep Aurora Energy
Further comment
I believe that the sale of Aurora Energy would be a backwood step as far as the council is concerned. Electricity is essential to all ratepayers as well as any other residents in the city. The council by way of Aurora Energy are the owner of all the lines and cables that provide the power to all. The lines and cables that transport that essential product called electricity can be likened to the roads that provide the means to drive around the city. Imagine the uproar from ratepayers if the council decided to sell the roading infrastructure to a private investment company with that company then expecting to make a profit from their investment! There is no other way to provide the power to consumers other than by the council owned lines and cables. During the government led reforms of the electricity industry of the late 1990’s and the subsequent Delta management decisions between 2000 and 2012 when a myriad of companies were bought and sold that were not related to the basic essential of providing a stable and efficient power distribution company. The end result of these decisions is the high cost now faced by Aurora Energy to play catchup with the maintenance and replacement of ageing equipment necessary for the efficient transport of electricity to all. I consider that as electricity is a essential social service to all then the council must retain ownership of Aurora Energy and not expect excessive profits from Aurora Energy to ensure all areas population is able to access their electricity as required.
