Which option do you prefer?
Option Two – The alternative option – Keep Aurora Energy
Further comment
KIa ora,
I am very much in favor of option two as if the asset is sold it will be no longer in the control of the Dunedin City Council. However, I believe there is a third option that would better serve the people of Dunedin, and that is to sell 49% of Aurora Energy and the City keep 51%, thereby retaining overall control of Auorora Energy.
If this option were adopted it would be possible to remove Aurora Energy's debt, allowing the company to get back on its feet and continue to provide its core services without the pressure of debt repayment. The payment of dividends could begin once the infrastructure of the company is of an appropriate standard.
If option one is adopted there will be minimal protection for consumers of the rate they are charged for services by Aurora Energy. I am aware that there are currently Commerce Commission regulations governing what is charged to consumers, but I have no confidence that at some future time these regulations will not be removed, and we will be at the mercy of a profit driven private company. Electricity and the distribution thereof, is a core service that we structure our homes, businesses and lives around. This city invested in electricity generation in 1907 so there is a legacy to be respected for our grandchildren and their children in the years to come. I acknowledge that the Waipori dam was sold, and an investment fund established, however it was sold because of the then government's reforms. That is not the case for the proposed sale of Aurora energy.
Please do not sell Aurora Energy.
