I'm writing to support the retention of Aurora Energy. It is vital that the city retains this crucial infrastructure and does expose the residents of the city to market forces. Private sector ownership would seek to maximise return on invest rather than maintain important infrastructure. The sale of Aurora Energy would expose the people of Dunedin to the likelihood of accelerated increased cost for energy supply.
If it's a sound proposition for an entity to purchase these assets then, by the same logic, it means it is a sound and sensible investment for the city to retain ownership.
To me it looks as though Dunedin City Holdings has been shifting debt form one subsidiary to another to maintain some sort of financial integrity.
It would make more sense to sell the stadium as this has been the major driver of debt for the City of Dunedin and is a massive liability in terms of servicing the debt created to build it and the ongoing running costs. An embarrassing folly. The elephant in the room.
