Attention kids (and parents). St Clair Playground is back in action – just in time for the school holidays.
Dunedin City Council contractors removed the last of the fencing yesterday, so it’s all go for fun, although we ask visitors to respect some roped areas, where grass seed has been sown.
There are a range of improvements aimed at making the park more adventurous and accessible for children of all ages and abilities.
New play elements include a tube slide, a sand play area, a nature play area, a palisade climbing structure and an easy swing bed. The seesaw has been replaced, and a standing swing reinstated.
Mana whenua have contributed to the playground’s design and theme, providing valuable opportunities to educate and connect users to mana whenua stories.
Utilising the site’s unique topography and features, we’ve added a new accessible ramp while retaining sun shading elements to ensure users of the playground can stay sun smart.
Heath Ellis, DCC Group Manager Parks and Recreation says, “We are delighted that this exciting revamp of a much-loved area will be open before the school holidays.”
“We hope the refurbished playground will provide much enjoyment and entertainment to youngsters and the wider Dunedin community.”
“Work on the playground began in mid-March and has progressed smoothly. We thank all our partners – in particular, mana whenua – for their passion and expertise in helping bring this project to fruition.”
“The work is part of our ongoing efforts to provide improved play areas across the city in response to community feedback. We’ve recently completed upgrades at Bathgate Park, College Street and the Dunedin Botanic Garden, and these have proved popular with tamariki, rangatahi and whānau.”
