Road conditions(2) Water shutdowns(1)

Dunedin City Council – Kaunihera-a-rohe o Otepoti

We register and inspect approximately 120 hairdressing salons in and around Dunedin to ensure they maintain minimum standards of health and comply with all relevant legislation.

Serving refreshments

Under the Regulations, you can serve refreshments, provided you do not do so in the service area where hair is being cut. You have a responsibility to keep your food safe.

Cleaning and disinfection

A clean salon is less likely to spread microbial infections or head lice. While most salons in Dunedin maintain good standards of cleanliness, there are often issues with inadequate disinfection of equipment and this can cause a health risk for both you and your customers.

You must thoroughly wash all equipment in hot water and detergent after use on each customer to remove hair, grease and other matter. You need a sink specifically for this purpose.  After washing equipment must also be disinfected using an appropriate disinfecting solution.  This should be suitable for the purpose and used according to manufacturer instructions.

At the end of each day, or immediately after use on a person with infected skin, disinfect all your equipment in one of the following ways:

  • Moist heat
  • Chemical agents
  • Ultra violet rays

Personal hygiene

A high standard of personal hygiene is reasonable when you have close contact with your clients. It is important to have clear policies in place for your staff so they know to:

  • Wash their hands frequently and thoroughly
  • Stay at home or on non-hairdressing duties if they have skin infections on their head, neck, hands or arms
  • Smoke only on breaks and wash their hands thoroughly afterwards
  • Wear clean, easily washable clothing
  • Keep combs and other tools out of their pockets

Refuse and vermin control

To prevent vermin gaining entry into your premises seal all holes and gaps around doors, pipes and in the ceiling space. If you check your premises regularly, they are unlikely to become a serious problem. If you find evidence of vermin, lay bait or traps.

Dogs

Dogs, other than guide dogs, are not permitted in hairdressing salons.

"No Dogs" notices should be posted near your salon's entrance. We can supply these to you free of charge.
