What is your feedback on the proposed changes
This consultation document makes a mockery of community consultation. This statement is particularly ill-considered... “The changes proposed are to support businesses with short term visitor parking. Port Otago has provided for additional unrestricted parking nearby on Beach Street (toward Carey’s Bay) for use, offsetting the lost parking in this area.” The issue here does not concern ‘parking time restrictions,’ but the loss of eight parking spaces in a critical location, in front of the Library and Service Centre. (There appears to be no sound justification for the removal of these parks, resulting from the proposed move of the pedestrian crossing which, in turn, is unjustified as summer cruise ship visitors – which may be the driver here - are now so numerous, they are highly visible to vehicles). These existing eight Library parks are vital. They enable the local community, in particular young families and the elderly, to visit a key community resource with ease; and to do so year-round, in all weathers. Removing this ready access is a travesty. Furthermore, suggesting this re-allocation of parks somehow ‘supports businesses’ is unjustified. The loss of these parks will require the majority of Library users to now park elsewhere. I have lived in and walked around Port Chalmers regularly for over 30 years and can attest that the parks in front of the Tunnel Hotel are rarely available. Library and Service Centre users will then look to George Street to park. This is easier (and much safer) to reach than the road to Carey’s Bay and less steep than Grey Street. Parking in the main street is already a problem, so to suggest this change somehow benefits businesses, like my own, is totally unfounded. It's very disappointing that Port Otago is pushing through changes which directly disadvantage the local community. For the record, I am a long-term resident and advocate of our wonderful community, owner of The Flying Whale Gallery in the main street and the first Librarian in Port Chalmers (1989-94).
