What is your feedback on the proposed changes
Through its recent and proposed improvements within Port Chalmers, Port Otago has increased both off-road private car parking for staff and visitors (+35 additional spaces) and public on-road car parking (+14 additional spaces) through removal of redundant vehicle crossings and reinstatement of kerbs. Port Otago actively encourages its staff to use our new staff car park and not to park on the public road within the immediate vicinity for all-day parking. As a consequence, Port Otago has observed that the parking spaces that have been freed up by Port Otago staff are now being utilised by contractors and others for all-day parking. This makes it difficult for visitors to Port Otago and the Museum (and other local businesses) to find short-term parking during the day. Port Otago therefore supports the proposed parking restriction changes on Beach Street, Port Chalmers. For these restrictions to be effective, there will also need to be improved monitoring and enforcement. Port Otago recommends that the DCC installs parking sensors as have been installed outside the public toilets on George Street, Port Chalmers, to assist with enforcement and to provide empirical data regarding typical durations of stay.
