Moving the pedestrian crossing to the front of the Port Chalmers Library will result in the loss of 8 easy access car parks to the library. This is clearly a move to suit the cruise ship industry, a permanent local change for a seasonal tourist activity. It is critical that those with young children and elderly people to have easy access to the library. We live in St Leonards and I used it regularly when my children were toddlers then school aged, choosing to go there over town because of its accessibility - as do many others on the port line. I still occasionally get books there and it is still the only DCC service centre I use. If parking becomes problematic I will simply go elsewhere. If other local people feel the same I am extremely concerned about the longevity of the library. I am hugely disappointed at this proposal as the library is a crucial asset providing a raft of social values that meet the mental health needs and of wellbeing of our community. People need a place to meet and talk in a non commercial, social environment. It is a sanctuary in a commercially driven world. If local people require easy access to use the library they will sadly have to stop going, directly losing their social connection. The current crossing is clearly visible. I have had no issue with people using it while driving to the library for almost 20 years, including when cruise passengers and container staff are visiting. Please consider an appropriate signage solution to the current crossing over moving it entirely.
