What is your feedback on the proposed changes
Moving existing angled parking outside the library only supports the Port Otago business and its desire to move cruise ship passengers quickly away from its terminal. The existing pedestrian crossing I feel adequately does this job,
moving people across from the terminal side of the street along to George St. I have seen this process, working all be it ably assisted by PO staff. This more than manages the existing volumes of foot traffic for the short period of time when it is required and there doesn't appear to be any safety concerns as it presently exists.
Moving angled parks away from the library front door will adversely affect the elderly people and young families who are the main users of the library and service center. Putting the new proposed ped crossing outside the library will mean that large volumes of cruise ship passengers will block the library/service center entrance for residents when they are attempting to get in. I can imagine that this will be especially prevalent when there are the new proposed angle parks on the eastern side meaning residents will have to wait until large volumes of cruise ship passengers cross the street on the crossing.
Having a proposed mobility park on the west side of the new proposed pedestrian crossing will mean a U turn will need to be made on Beach St to access this and this won't be easily achieved and is in fact a dangerous undertaking in a congested traffic area.
The proposed ped crossing is within app 30 meters of the Port Otago carpark exit which is a safety concern.
The proposed changes have lacked previous consultation and are not justified in terms of providing any additional safety provisions within the Beach St area. This seems like Port Otago has an issue with traffic management of its own making and rather than look to its own property further along Beach St to the east, to resolve it has taken an option that will adversely residents.
I also question the time limit on new proposed parks, 30 mins seem inadequate for conducting business in the service center and also using the library.
