Karitane pipe renewals

We will be starting a project to replace 6km of water supply pipes in the Karitane area in November 2020.

The current pipes were installed in the 1960s and are being replaced due to normal wear and tear. The work on the water pipes will improve the area’s drinking water and result in fewer burst pipes and unplanned shutdowns and improved water pressure.

Construction will begin in November and is scheduled to be completed by November 2021.

The contractor is Downer who will be working to ensure minimum disruption for residents. However, the work will involve traffic management (including some road closures) and water shutdowns when the new pipes are connected and the old pipes are decommissioned. If the work is scheduled for your street, the contractor will notify you beforehand and let you know about any disruptions.

Which pipes are being replaced and when?

We are replacing approximately 6km of water pipes in Karitane. The pipes to be replaced are the main supply pipes and lateral pipes to property boundaries.

The works are planned to start in November 2020. The contractor who will undertake the work is Downer.

Why are water pipes being renewed?

We are experiencing higher than average break rate of repairs compared to other areas in our network.

How long will the project take?

The project is scheduled to finish in November 2021.

Will my street be closed while the work is done?

Traffic management will be needed while work is done on your street. This may involve reducing the street to a single lane, using priority give ways or, in some cases, closing the street. The contractor will inform residents of when works are planned on their street and can discuss access options. Please get in touch with us if you may have any particular problems with work on your street.

Will my water be shut off while the work is done?

We will minimise the number and duration of water shutdowns as much as possible, but some shutdowns will still be needed. We will let you know about any planned shutdowns for your street beforehand.

If a water shutdown would cause significant problems for you, please let us know and we will do our best to find a solution e.g. we may be able to adjust the scheduling of shutdowns.
