Investigation work has recently been carried out to help plan the renewal of the water supply and foul sewer pipes in the Carey’s Bay area.
A number of the pipes in the Carey’s Bay are coming to the end of their useful life and any water main bursts cause a large amount of disruption to Carey’s Bay as well as the surrounding area. Replacing the pipes will help mitigate both issues.
In 2021, enabling works were carried out on Macandrew Road by Fulton Hogan to help minimize disruption to the area caused by unexpected bursts on the water main. Some investigative pothole drilling was also performed through the wider area to gather information which is being used to help with the investigations and design.
Many pipes in Carey’s Bay run through private properties. We will endeavour to design a plan to either move these to the road if possible or to minimise the impact to these properties if not.
Further investigation work was carried out in 2022 to help plan the renewal of the water supply and foul sewer pipes in the Carey’s Bay area. These were sufficient to be able to continue on with a conceptual design in early 2023, however our priority projects were reassessed mid year which resulted in several projects being identified as a higher risk category and as such need to be higher on the priority list. The timing of the Careys Bay 3 waters renewal project is under review.

Information Sheet
Which pipes are being replaced?
We are replacing approximately 5 km of water supply and foul sewer pipes. The pipes are in the road reserve and within private property.
The map shows both the completed enabling work and the overall scope of pipes to be replaced.
Why are the pipes being renewed?
Most of the 3 Waters pipe system in Carey’s Bay is due for renewal due to both age and the disruption caused by unplanned outages. Some of the pipes are also undersized and renewals are required to align the network with current DCC and New Zealand Standards.
What is the project timeline?
The initial enabling works were completed in 2021. Pipe renewal construction is not planned to begin until the remaining renewal work has been designed and we have a clear indication of contractor availability and budget.
Will my street be closed while the work is done?
Traffic management will be needed while work is done on your street. This may involve reducing the street to a single lane, using priority give ways or, in some cases, closing the street. The contractor working in each area will inform residents of when works are planned on their street and can discuss access options. Please get in touch with the contractor if you will have any problems with work on your street.
Will my water be shut off while the work is done?
We will minimise the number and duration of water shutdowns as much as possible, but some shutdowns will still be needed. We will let you know about any planned shutdowns for your street beforehand.
If a water shutdown would cause significant problems for you, please let us know and we will do our best to find a solution. For example, we may be able to adjust the scheduling of shutdowns.
