Dog Control Bylaw 2024 and Dog Control Policy 2024 are effective from 5 May 2025

Changes to the rules

Key changes to the rules, effective from 5 May 2025 are:

  • Dog access – dogs on a leash (but not tied up or left unattended) will be permitted in:
    • The Octagon,
    • Library Plaza,
    • sections of Princes Street and George Street between the Exchange and Knox Church, and
    • King Edward Street (South Dunedin) between Hillside and Macandrew Roads
  • Dog limit in public spaces – individuals may have up to six dogs under their care in public spaces. Written permission is required for exceptions. Details about permits and conditions will be available in early 2025.
  • Leash requirement in coastal dunes - dogs must be leashed in all coastal dune areas including access paths, to protect wildlife.

  • Some general requirements are not shown on the map. For example, unless specified elsewhere, dogs must be on leash on roads, footpaths, tracks, cemeteries and beaches.

  • Dogs must be kept under control in all public places at all times.
