Should we remove 231 Stuart Street (formerly the Fortune Theatre) from the list of strategic assets in the DCC Significance and Engagement policy?
Yes, remove 231 Stuart Street from the list of strategic assets (this is our preferred option)
Do you have any comments about 231 Stuart Street?
Indian Ink Theatre Company has been in existence since 1997 and has been regularly touring original New Zealand theatre to Dunedin since not long after. Since Fortune Theatre’s (Stuart St) closure in 2018, Indian Ink has been unable to tour to Otago because of the lack of a flexible, well-equipped performance space that is suitable for established, high quality, professional theatre.
Currently the available spaces are either too small, too old and badly in need of refurbishment, inaccessible, or not available for much of the time (University or school performance spaces).
While the Regent Theatre is an amazing and iconic space, it is often too large and therefore too high risk for most touring theatre companies because of the high cost to hire and the number of people required to fill it to make it financially viable.
Dunedin needs a practical, unflashy, flexible, and cost-effective building as a performing arts centre that local communities can be proud of, and that everyone in the city and beyond want to come to.
It is therefore crucial that Dunedin City Council reinstates the 17.1m originally allocated for a new performing arts venue to ensure that the loyal, supportive and enthusiastic people of Dunedin and surrounds have a whare they can be proud of and which allows their creativity to shine.
Build this new venue and you will also have an influx of economic and creative investment from people coming into the city to see shows that will more than pay back the 17.1m investment over time (not just in dollars but also the reputation of Dunedin as a national centre of creative note).
Indian Ink would certainly be one of the touring companies keen to invest in sharing our compelling and engaging stories in an environment that enhances the experience and ensures the absolute best outcome for all.
Please reconsider the 17.1m funding cut and make the sensible choice to invest in a new performing arts centre for the region.
Should we charge an entry fee of $20 (incl. GST) for international visitors aged 16 and over, at Toitū and Dunedin Public Art Gallery?
Do you have any comments about the entry fee for international visitors?
Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
