I am the Bikes coordinator for the Southern Youth Development. We run a programme with youth to fix and recycle bikes that go to landfill and redistribute these in the community. It is ironic that our bike recycling programme is very inaccessible for people on bikes. Transport to our site is a significant barrier for our rangatahi. There is a significant opportunity to improve cycling connections across the city and to better enable students to utilise the town belt routes to connect between schools and SYD. There are so many schools located on or close to the town belt (Queens Drive). This route not only provides opportunities to enhance connections to SYD but also presents a great route for students to use to and from schools. We are keen to attract more students from various schools particularly in the hill suburbs. A safe connection could enable students from Trinity College, OBHS, OGHS, St Hildas, Columba College. This could increase our outreach and help us have a bigger impact on our community.
One of the goals of our programme is to enable more people in our community to ride bikes and have better transport choice for getting around the city. Providing safer options for people to walk and cycle is critical to the success of our programme and our youth to have a meaningful impact in our community.
We are grateful to be able to make a difference in building the skills of our youth. However, there is a greater opportunity to see this recycling programme translate to more people riding bikes in our city. It is imperative that the infrastructure is provided to encourage more people to take up cycling in the city.
