Submission

9 year plan feedback

Should we remove 231 Stuart Street (formerly the Fortune Theatre) from the list of strategic assets in the DCC Significance and Engagement policy?
No, keep 231 Stuart Street as a strategic asset

Do you have any comments about 231 Stuart Street?
The information is not convincing for this course of action. I do not see the necessity to remove public consultation from the process. If an opportunity to sell is so good for the city, I'm sure we will back it at such time.

Should we charge an entry fee of $20 (incl. GST) for international visitors aged 16 and over, at Toitū and Dunedin Public Art Gallery?
Yes, introduce an entry fee of $20 (incl. GST) (this is our preferred option)

Do you have any comments about the entry fee for international visitors?
This is a reluctant Yes. It's not that I don't support charging international visitors, as I gladly pay for museums and galleries when I travel overseas. But it's important this doesn't make any barriers to New Zealanders, people of Ōtepoti Dunedin, our students, our tamariki from being able to visit these great cultural assets.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
Improve the cycleway connections, particularly in the inner city. I commute by bike on average 9 days out of 10, year round. The safer these connections are, the more people cycle. Fewer cars on the road, fewer cars parked in the city all day, clogging-up our streets. From my point of view this is the path from the harbour teeth into the city centre, with particular consideration to what it actually takes to ride a bike. Every metre extra we’re expected to ride (e.g., the whole of Kitchener St) is a barrier to more people cycling. But I’m sure there are similar improvements to make from other approaches. Prioritise bikes. It’s imperative the design is undertaken by someone who actually rides a bike and not someone who only drives. Install the Rainbow crossings to Bath St. The queer community, particularly the trans community is facing a rise in attacks and abuse. Our city should stand for making it a safe place for everyone. Continue work to make South Dunedin climate resilient. This is not just a “South D” issue. Too many in this city don’t care. But it’s where we live and funnily enough, it’s part of our infrastructure for how people who live on the peninsula get to their homes. The second floor of the new South Dunedin Library should be for community organisations. It’s a community asset, not a commercial asset, and given the disgraceful disinvestment in the South D community over a long period of time, it’s the least that could be done to win back some trust. Be ambitious about where the city can go: better fund the things that attract people, such as arts, culture and creativity (for it's own sake, not just to attract tourists -- the people of Ōtepoti deserve nice things too!), and ensure more funds go to the organisations that deliver programming and services. To me this looks like greater, funding and staffing for the Ōtepoti Live Music Action Plan and honouring the commitment to a new, purpose-built performing arts venue. Many of our treasured venues are struggling and they mostly have accessibility issues and this means not everyone can access our homegrown culture. Artists will always step-up and create whether they are funded or not, but the more opportunities for artists to create and perform we can foster, they greater our city will be as a place to live. I don’t want to drive to Christchurch and spend my money in their hotels and restaurants, to get some culture. I want Dunedin artists to tell our stories to all who live here.

Local Water Done Well feedback

Which water services delivery model do you support?
The Council’s preferred option: an in-house delivery model

Why did you choose this option?
I am convinced by the information provided.

Do you have any other feedback related to the proposed water services delivery models?
Keep going! Fresh water is essential for life. Civilisation only exists with wastewater.
