Should we remove 231 Stuart Street (formerly the Fortune Theatre) from the list of strategic assets in the DCC Significance and Engagement policy?
Yes, remove 231 Stuart Street from the list of strategic assets (this is our preferred option)
Do you have any comments about 231 Stuart Street?
Remove and sell it IF the buyer is going to do something with the theatre - rather than let it sit and rot further... Such a beautiful old building and space that was used for theatre in our town - it's appalling that it hasn't been looked after, refurbished and being actively used for theatre in Dunedin.
Should we charge an entry fee of $20 (incl. GST) for international visitors aged 16 and over, at Toitū and Dunedin Public Art Gallery?
No, do not introduce an entry fee of $20 (incl. GST)
Do you have any comments about the entry fee for international visitors?
Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I would like to write about my dismay and real concern about the earmarked money being removed for the performing arts. My children have grown up attending The Playhouse Theatre, they then became involved in the theatre themselves and I have also become involved in the committee. I am a teacher and I see the benefit many children from my school have had from attending the theatre that they would not have had otherwise. These children will lose the opportunity to attend, and indeed be involved in any sort of live, affordable theatre and this is a crime! We are slowly and systematically removing ties to community from our young people.
The fact that the Playhouse theatre is on it's last legs is obvious to all. It is managed and run by a small group of volunteers who are extemely committed but also, not impervious to the time, and the health and safety risks that will become more and more real. The Theatre will not survive if the Council do not help out. Like the Fortune Theatre, it will just become another empty building, rotting away, that once used to bring delight and love and laughter to many Dunedin people. The council has a chance to do something to support, prop up, encourage and give life to live theatre within our city that once upon a time used to pride itself upon.
