9 year plan feedback

Should we remove 231 Stuart Street (formerly the Fortune Theatre) from the list of strategic assets in the DCC Significance and Engagement policy?
Yes, remove 231 Stuart Street from the list of strategic assets (this is our preferred option)

Do you have any comments about 231 Stuart Street?
231 Stuart Street was a good option, compared with the Fortune Theatre's earlier premises in the Octagon. It had numerous disadvantages, however. They included poor disabled access, and cramped entry, bar and toilet spaces. It is not a suitable venue for high-quality dramatic productions. Profits from the sale of the building could be used to support performing arts venues.

Should we charge an entry fee of $20 (incl. GST) for international visitors aged 16 and over, at Toitū and Dunedin Public Art Gallery?
No, do not introduce an entry fee of $20 (incl. GST)

Do you have any comments about the entry fee for international visitors?

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
Unlike other larger Aotearoa New Zealand cities, Dunedin does not have a professional theatre, and has not had one for eight years. In consequence, it has been impossible for full-scale, locally produced theatrical productions to be mounted. Considering our status as a UNESCO City of Literature, this is disgraceful. Priority should be given to the establishment of a mid-sized, built-for-purpose theatre on a suitable site, in consultation with Stage South and other relevant bodies. The $17.1m. originally allocated for a performing arts centre, and withdrawn in January of this year, should be restored. Support should also be given to the smaller Dunedin theatres which struggle, usually with inadequate funding, to continue to make available amateur, children's and sometimes experimental productions which are an essential part of a vibrant city's performing arts scene. These venues include Te Whare o Rukutia (which is in need of immediate support) and the Mayfair, New Athenaeum and Playhouse theatres, all of which need investment to remain fit for purpose. Although their needs vary, all are suffering from lack of funding and badly in need of help. The Professional Theatre Fund should be continued and increased.
