Kia ora Councilors, I am writing to express my strong support for continued and increased investment in the entrepreneurial and startup space as part of the 9-Year Plan. When I first had the idea for my business I was struck by Startup Dunedin's mission; to make Dunedin the worlds most entrepreneurial small city. I was given practical resources from the outset - the Lean Canvas, banking connections, advice on my first customer interviews and focus groups. I was guided every step of the way with bespoke coaching, support networks, and desk space - an absolute game-changer. When it came time to launch, I stood at the back of Startup Dunedin's co-working space and reflected on the people in the room - supporters, friends, and importantly, customers who made the foundation of my business. Startup Dunedin is not only the difference between me remaining in Dunedin or going to a larger hub; they were the difference between us getting off the ground or not. Now, as funding opportunities dry up and crowdfunding platforms rely on marketing know-how and campaigns not available to most founders, I'm seeing more brilliant ideas for Dunedin and indeed, global business fade into "pipe dreams". Startup Dunedin is crucial to removing barriers for people who would propel Dunedin ahead of our counterparts, in innovation and opportunity. I would like to commend Startup Dunedin for their recent micro-grants. If we want businesses to invest in Dunedin, then we must be ready to invest in them. The is no stage more important than at the start of the business lifecycle to give a founder the best chance at success and show we believe in Dunedin's talents and prospects; gaining their loyalty is an added bonus! I firmly believe increasing funding to Startup Dunedin, and the wider entrepreneurial space, is key to driving economic growth in our city. Ngā mihi nui mo tō whakaaro, thank you for your consideration. Laura Bradley
