I am writing to express my strong support for continued investment in the entrepreneurial and startup space as part of the 9-Year Plan. Dunedin is at a precipice for establishing itself as the most attractive place in the country to start up - a vibrant tertiary sector, a great lifestyle and a business friendly environment. To do this we need the foundational support and connectivity of Startup Dunedin, the network of the organisation and connectivity it brings to the national ecosystem.
Startup Dunedin plays a vital role in supporting early-stage businesses by offering the connections, mentorship, and national reach needed to succeed. The vibrant ecosystem created by Startup Dunedin cultivates the next generation of employers, retains talented graduates and energises the broader economy with fresh ideas and innovation.
The investment in the entrepreneurial ecosystem has been vital to myself starting up my business - Cheeky Tea Company - in Dunedin. The resources, guidance and connections allowed me to overcome the barriers experienced by many young founders and accelerate the growth of my business here in Dunedin. Without Startup Dunedin, I can confidently say that my company would not be where it is today.
As entrepreneurship continues to grow in popularity among younger generations, Startup Dunedin is well-positioned to build on its strong foundation and meet the increasing need for an active, connected startup community. It will continue to be a keystone in expanding our networks and opening up national and international opportunities — all while enabling founders to choose Dunedin as the place they live, work, and grow.
Investing in Startup Dunedin is an investment in the city's long-term future. As we plan for the next decade, it is essential that we back initiatives that drive sustainable growth, create opportunities, and help Dunedin remain vibrant, diverse, and future-focused. Startup Dunedin has played a pivotal role in the journeys of many founders, including my own, and I am a strong advocate for continued support to ensure the next generation of entrepreneurs can succeed here.
