The Playhouse Children’s Theatre want to see funding for performing arts venues in our city, and for some of that funding going to help refurbish the Playhouse Theatre.
The Playhouse is a unique and special place for tamariki and rangatahi to experience live theatre - as audience, cast, or crew. We get to do the thing we love and make friends with kids from other schools. We learn skills like tech, drama, singing, dancing, teamwork, theatre skills and how to work with younger kids. We remember our first shows, feeling the lights on us as we say our dialogue, and having the kids in the audience smile and laugh.
The kids that come to watch our shows enjoy them, laugh a lot, and we love talking to them at the end of the show. Ōtepoti needs the Children’s Theatre to continue live theatre and encourage people to watch live performance – especially at the Playhouse where it’s cheaper than the movies or other entertainment.
The Playhouse Children’s Theatre has been going for over 50 years but is now struggling because our building is so old. It takes a lot of money, time and effort to make sure it stays safe for us. We really want Council’s help to make sure the Children’s Theatre can keep going for another 50 years.
