I support the Tunnels Trail project to develop a Shared Path/Cycleway between Mosgiel and Caversham, and want it added back in to the Annual Plan for immediate action. The Tunnels Trail project should be funded without delay, and given high priority, with a focus of delivering operational sections as soon as possible. While NZTA co-funding may not be currently available, other sources of co-funding need to be investigated, or allow the Trust/Community to independently proceed with development. The Tunnels Trail is Dunedin's internal transport corridor between the coast and the Plain, as well as our link to the wider Otago cycleway network. Mountain biking in the city should also be given a larger focus with increased funding. Dunedin has the best afterwork mountain biking access of the major centres in New Zealand and is a huge drawcard for professionals to live in the city. Its also a big benefit for existing professionals and families to stay living in Dunedin. All of the trails in Dunedin are volunteer maintained by Mountain Biking Otago with assistance from the DCC for funding, however this funding is only covering some bare essential maintenance that isn’t feasible by volunteers (agricultural spraying, some digger work etc). There is a huge volunteer effort to keep these assets to a minimum standard and we are starting to fall behind other major centres with more funding that are able to improve and expanding their mountain biking network. Without the existing funding, a lot of trails would likely become overgrown and unrideable, so the current funding is greatly appreciated. As cycling is proven to increase peoples well-being and health, it should be given more priority. Funding should be allocated to the tunnels trail project and increased funding for mountain biking assets.
