9 Year submission – Rates Relief Grant.
With the proposed rates increases, there will be more demand for Rates Relief grants. The Rates Relief Grant scheme should be retained, increased and extended to cover these demands.
The South Dunedin Hall Trust has a special case for continuing to receive the Rates Relief Grant.
The old South Dunedin Hall was well utilised by the South Dunedin community, but the 1878 building was requiring significant money to be spent by the Dunedin City Council to maintain the building in a usable condition. The South Dunedin Hall Trust acquired the old South Dunedin Hall from the Dunedin City Council and replaced the Hall, thereby alleviating the Dunedin City Council of all ongoing maintenance costs.
The new Hall now 26 years old has proved to be an important meeting place; for elder educational programs, religious gatherings, pacifica cultural activities, public meetings, community functions, dances, sports events, master games venue. It is one of the largest Halls in South Dunedin.
Regular hirers of the South Dunedin community Hall include: Otago Darts Associations, Age Concern Otago – South Dunedin activities, Dunedin Rock and Roll Revival Club, South Dunedin Dance Club, South Dunedin Plus 60 Line dancers, South Dunedin Market, Special Olympics Bowls, Jesus is Lord, South Pacific Trust, Samoan Group, and private hirers.
The biggest expenditures for running the South Dunedin community Hall are; Insurance, power and Rates. These costs are continuing to increase significantly each year.
With the proposed rate increases the ‘Rate Relief grant’ will be more important to the South Dunedin Hall Trust to enable it to offer affordable hires of the South Dunedin community Hall for the local South Dunedin community groups.
