I am writing to strongly oppose the proposed construction of a landfill at Smooth Hill. My opposition is rooted in deep concern for the environmental, and economic consequences this project poses for our community and future generations. Environmental Impact Brighton beach and wetlands have immense natural beauty and ecological value. Establishing a landfill upstream of Otokia creek would endanger native flora and fauna, potentially leach contaminants into waterways, and disrupt delicate wetland ecosystems. The risk due to flooding is particularly alarming. This would not only threaten biodiversity but also compromise the safety of recreational environments (beach, swimming in the creek!). Furthermore, the landfill proposal contradicts the national and global movement toward reducing waste and promoting sustainable waste management practices such as recycling, composting, and waste minimization. Building a landfill is a step backward and signals a lack of commitment to long-term environmental responsibility. Cost to Taxpayers The financial burden of constructing and maintaining a landfill is significant. Ratepayers will face increased costs for decades due to infrastructure development, environmental monitoring, and eventual remediation. These costs come at a time when public is already feeling pressures of economic downturn and increasing rates. I urge you to reject the proposed landfill at Smooth Hill and instead invest in more environmentally and financially sustainable options. Sincerely, Jana Dorana
