Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
Kia ora,
I am writing in reference to the 9 year plan and most specifically about my belief that it is essential that funding and infrastructure be put in place for a new up to date mid size venue, and that the 17 million be put back into the 9 year plan.
I have lived and worked as a professional theatre practitioner for the last 37 years in Ōtepoti.
I have seen the arts flourish and then falter, I was an original member of Transforming Dunedin and was on the CDP for 5 years. I was initially excited about the creation of the Ara Toi arts Strategy, but noted over the years that it wasn’t being truly fulfilled and the arts;particularly the performing arts, were in a worse state since its inception.
In attending the new arts strategy meeting, I was a bit disheartened that we were demanding and discussing the same points and things had not really progressed in 10 years. I feel disappointed that all the consultation and ideas offered in the Charcoal Blue report are not being referenced. Why and what we need is clearly explored, it seems irresponsible that you spent over 300k for this report and it is not being put to use.
To claim that arts and culture are at the core of Dunedin is a bold statement- a lot more needs to be done to make this statement true. We are in crisis mode, and for theatre practitioners in this city there is no viable way to make sustainable living.
We need a mid size venue desperately, this is something that has been put on the table and then taken off over several decades.
You cannot be a great little city without a thriving and sustainable arts scene.
We are on a precipice for the arts, please consider carefully how you go forward with enabling the arts to survive.
Ngā mihi,
Clare Adams
