Te Awa Ōtākou - Portobello /Harington Pt Rd, Road Safety Improvement Project, Otago Peninsula Good decision to complete the remaining three sections between Portobello and Ōhinetu of the Te Awa Ōtākou Portobello /Harington Pt Rd’s Safety Improvement Project. Especially notable is the priority given to complete the project in years 2, 3, and 4 of the DCC’s Long Term Annual Plan. This is welcome news and a desirable outcome, thank you. As a rate payer who lives east of Portobello I already benefit from the safer road conditions along the entire road from town, such as, reduced ‘wash out/pot holes’ on the seaward carriage way, better drainage of ground water, greater use, enjoyment and visibility of peninsula residents using the shared pathway for health and fitness, seating/rest areas amongst native plantings, safer cycling and walking, especially to and from school and work. The drive at night has improved light reflectors, especially beneficial on the seaward side in poor/foggy conditions. I am so looking forward to the completion of these three sections, the Ellison Rd to Ōhinetu in year two, 2026/27 to begin with. This is a dangerous stretch, susceptible to sea action, weather events and passing head on traffic at the blind corner by the Fisheries. The second section from Tidewater Drive to Ellison Road in year three 2027/28 is naturally a higher speed area, it will be a relief to have designated cycle and walkway both sides to improve safety and increase enjoyment while walking/cycling/driving through an inland landscape. I acknowledge the expertise of Council staff and advisories, especially in the preparation needed to be carried out in order to achieve the landward option from Portobello to Weir Road in year four, 2028/29. The increase in traffic and heavy vehicles makes the cutting by the school so hazardous. Safety for our Tamariki is paramount so no taking the ‘foot off the peddle’ as together we all look forward to completion of this project which Council saw the necessity for in 2015. A celebratory community wide BBQ might be in order in 2029! Completing this project will increase the enormous benefits, evident everyday in terms of improved safety, increasing potential for new businesses and strengthening connection through recreational opportunities previously unavailable, while enhancing the peninsula as a destination.
