Cruise ship tourists should be charged when it comes to attractions like this as its a unique cultural experience on the history of Ōtepoti where they would not be able to experience this anywhere else. Also the impact of the cruise ships should also be considered. Cruise ship tourists do not bring a lot of revenue to our city as most of the facilities and amenities they utilize are already available on the cruise ships.
Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
As mentioned above we don't necessarily need to stop cruise ships from coming to Ōtepoti, however there should be more stricter regulations on cruise ships entering our harbor. We need to put rules in place in regards to the petrol they use and the damage it does to our waterways, whenua, seabed, marine life as these natural resources is what makes Ōtepoti unique and if we want to continue with tourism we need to sustain these natural resources. I strongly urge the need to tautoko the Zero Carbon bill as it is an emergency to save Papatūānuku, our climate, our whenua. As DCC it is important to show local support and lead by example as our natural environment is crucial to the economic, social and cultural wellbeing and importance of our city.
Also another important topic is the need for the ban on the procurement from Israel's illegal settlements in support of the International Court of Justice. We need to take a stand in support of our local Palestinian community but also to take a stand for human rights as a whole. We need to agree to stop purchasing good and services from these illegal settlements. It is unjust and we are giving profit to support a Genocide. We need to show Kotahitanga and humanity and show that we wont be complicit in supporting a Genocide. This not only about the Genocide in Palestine but it is in support of a wider issue of humanity in which the system that is in place puts profit before people's lives. It is our duty as human beings to stand up for what is right and just. We have the privilege to use our voices and this is what we should we doing as our government is complicit in this matter.
Also lastly we need more funding for community initiatives in Ōtepoti whom provide a service to support the local community such as Pātaka Ora which provide a fortnightly free meal service on Mondays. This is an opportunity to feed the community but also bring people from all walks of life together. It is about about addressing food insecurity but also about creating a community which provides aroha and tautoko for all people. This is more pertinent than ever due to the cost of living and high rental costs which has worsened due to his current government who is more focused on greed and profit than providing sustainable living standards for most New Zealanders. Pātaka Ora also gives a sense of community and belonging and encourages social harmony and cohesion.
We need consistent funding to ensure that initiatives like Pātaka Ora can continue to provide this valuable service for the community. It helps support social wellbeing and breaks down walls of division and builds relationships between community members, creating a support network. We would like to continue to grow this service and create a community hub in which Pātaka Ora and Araiteuru Marae where the service is located can provide more services for the community to utilize to address all needs (health, childcare, food security, recreational), for example expanding our community gardens, taking care of the Kaikorai Valley stream, a kohanga reo, free health services & overall providing a place of refuge and togetherness for everyone. Aroha ki te Tangata. This is all about inclusivity and a space for everyone in the community to be part of.
Local Water Done Well feedback
Which water services delivery model do you support?
The Council’s preferred option: an in-house delivery model
Why did you choose this option?
As mentioned in the consultation document every rohe will have different needs and issues to be addressed when it comes to water supply and quality. The most important relationship should be Mana Whenua who are the Kaitiaki of this rohe and whenua and their voice should be included in the implementation of this service. We should also include climate and environmental groups who will also be able to provide expert knowledge on the sustainability of our waterways and how to continue to ensure we are providing quality drinking water without affecting the natural environment .
Do you have any other feedback related to the proposed water services delivery models?
