The Dunedin Symphony Orchestra (DSO) notes with disappointment the removal of the provision of $17.1 million for a performing arts theatre. We also note the addition of provision $4.4 million for major and community events and $2 million for Stadium events. While funding for events is welcomed, it is local artists who sustain Dunedin's lively arts and culture industry through performances and teaching, while also contributing to the city's economy. It follows that investment in local artists and their career pathways, as well as in appropriate arts infrastructure (such as a performing arts theatre), will provide wide-spread and sustainable long-term cultural, social wellbeing and economic benefits. We note and commend Stage South's development of concept plans for a performing arts theatre.
