The DPAG Society is a non-profit organisation of local art-lovers who support our magnificent public gallery through running events, connecting with other like-minded groups in the city, and providing funds for the acquisition of new works for the gallery. We oppose the introduction of an entry fee for international visitors for the following reasons: 1. Such a fee will certainly reduce overall visitor numbers to the gallery. The DPAG generally has excellent attendance rates, and anything which might depress these is to be avoided. 2. Any drop in attendance will diminish gallery shop income (which goes straight to city coffers) and affect viability of the gallery cafe. 3. No matter how careful the messaging around the proposed fee, many locals will only see the words "$20 entry fee", and will be discouraged from attending. We know how hard it is to communicate nuances these days - many simply don't read the fine print. The proposed entry fee is likely to put up a barrier to local participation. 4. Dunedin is known locally, and beyond, for the vibrancy and, even more importantly, the accessibility of its art scene. The proposed charge risks damaging this hard-earned reputation, for comparatively little financial gain.
