Dunedin’s new premier central city street market has announced a line-up of global street performers representing four continents.
The first George Street Market will take place on 8 February and is the next iteration of the Thieves Alley Market.
Dedicated zones for food, kids and street performers will break up the stalls lining George Street into vibrant pockets of colour and entertainment.
The main stage in the centre of the market will host seven local entertainers and musicians, while crowds should expect to be wowed by the international street performers Fire Ninja (Australia), Richard Circus Entertainment (Ghana/Taiwan), Andy Spigola and Daigoro (both Italy) fresh from their stints at Auckland International Buskers Festival.
“The inaugural George Street Market is thrilled to reveal this world-class talent, which brings an extraordinary calibre of entertainment to Dunedin, showcasing diverse acts that promise to captivate and inspire audiences,” says Dunedin Destination Manager Sian Sutton.
“They’ll bring international flare (literally) to the market with acrobatics, street magic and illusion, clowning and comedy, and an incredible fire performance.”
Nearly 200 artisan stalls will make up the market, selling an incredible mix of quality wares from crafts, jewellery and apparel to cosmetics, décor, and art.
The market showcases local art and talent at its finest, with most stallholders hailing from the Otago region (80%). It has also attracted talent from other regions such as Southland, Canterbury, Auckland, and Nelson.
While artisanal food producers will have their own stalls, there is also a dedicated food truck zone so people can enjoy a range of locally made cuisines from about 20 different vendors.
A reminder, some roads in the central city will be partially closed for this event and surrounding streets are expected to be busy. If you’re planning to drive, it is recommended you park further away from the event site to avoid congestion.
Orbus buses will be free for passengers between 10am to 4pm to support the event and help minimise traffic.
