Around 6000 youngsters from 31 Dunedin schools are set to walk, scoot, bike or bus their way to and from school to celebrate Move It March.
Move It March is a Dunedin City Council initiative that encourages active travel to school. This helps to build confidence, increase alertness at school, and has the wider benefit of reducing congestion around the school gates.
Because of all the extra activity, we’re asking drivers to take extra care around schools, especially on Wednesday 12 March, which is Walk and Wheel Day.
A significant active travel birthday is also about to be celebrated – the Sacred Heart School walking bus has been running continuously for 21 years in North Dunedin. The walking bus runs every Thursday during term time – come rain or shine.
Scout, the Safe and Active Travel mascot, will join the walking school bus on North Road on 13 March to help mark the big day.
Scout will also be using the bus to visit schools throughout the month so look out for the mascot on a bus route near you.
