Weather update #4

The Dunedin City Emergency Control Centre (EOC) has a keen watch on Mosgiel where wastewater issues are backing up and heavy rain is persisting.

EOC Controller Sandy Graham says crews are working hard to rectify the issues in the waste system, but in the meantime asks all residents not to flush the toilet or take showers or baths.

“The Mosgiel system is one connected network, so even if your toilet isn’t impacted, your pipes are all part of one big system. So for this to be quickly resolved we need the whole system to significantly reduce the use.”

The EOC will use all available media and social media channels to keep Mosgiel residents updated through the night.

Meanwhile rivers in Dunedin city which had risen over the day have remained at steady levels for the past two hours.  The rainfall is predicted to remain at a constant level for the next four hours with a spike around midnight.

Sandbags have been filled and are available for anyone in need. The stations are at:

  • Dunedin Ice Stadium carpark, 101 Victoria Road, Saint Kilda
  • Mosgiel Memorial Park gym carpark, 187D Gordon Road, Mosgiel

There are no evacuations centres open at this stage, but if required they will be activated quickly. Ms Graham says if anyone wants to leave their home, the first port of call should be to family and friends.

“But if anyone is in danger they should call 111 immediately and seek help from emergency services, and anyone with nowhere else to go can contact the DCC for support on 03 477 4000.”

The Dunedin EOC will provide further updates as needed this evening and tomorrow. Please also continue to monitor the DCC website and DCC social media channels for updates.
