Dunedin City Council – Kaunihera-a-rohe o Otepoti

Weather update #6

The Dunedin City Council is urging residents to stay safe as heavy rain overnight and into the small hours continues to affect the city and surrounding areas.

Te Puna o Whakaehu (Mosgiel Pool) and Mosgiel Library are closed today.

People are asked to stay home if possible, avoid any unnecessary travel and keep up to date with all the latest information.

A range of roads in Mosgiel were closed overnight because of surface flooding.

Dunedin City Emergency Management Operations Centre (EOC) controller Sandy Graham says, “Our stormwater network continues to work within capacity.”

Flood protection barriers have been installed in Surrey St, South Dunedin, and pumps and pipes in South Dunedin have managed the rainfall to date.

Three-Mile Hill is closed because of surface flooding.

There are small slips on Otago Peninsula, and caution is advised.

An evacuation centre was opened at the Taieri Bowling Club in Mosgiel overnight. At last report, a number of residents were making use of the facility. They include a family of five. Staff are delivering breakfast supplies.

There had been an issue with Mosgiel’s waste-water last night. This has been fixed and toilets and showers can be used, but we ask residents to call the DCC if they have any issues.

Sandbags are available for anyone in need. There are two sandbag stations – at Mosgiel Memorial Park gym carpark (entry through Church Street to avoid the worst of the surface flooding) and Dunedin Ice Stadium carpark.

Emergency services are on the ground along with DCC crews in Mosgiel, and if anyone has any risk to life or property please call 111. Check on your neighbours and share this information.

The DCC will continue to provide regular updates to residents via our website and Facebook.

The Dunedin EOC continues to operate and the DCC call centre is open for anyone across the city in need of help, on 03 477 4000.
