George St absolutely needs cycle lanes. There is now overwhelming evidence of the significant health harm (including an incredibly high number of excess deaths per year in Dunedin and elsewhere around Aotearoa) associated with exposure to vehicle pollution. There seems to be a mentality that the NZTA managed cycleway along SH1 is the north-south route that cyclists should stick to, but the reality is that cycling next to high volumes of traffic, including large numbers of very noisy, high-polluting heavy vehicles, is both unpleasant and unhealthy. With a cycleway, George St would become a much more pleasant and healthy cycling experience for daily commutes into the city centre.
