The retail sector in Dunedin is already struggling amidst prolonged road works throughout the main street and the city is already in major debt due to constant projects of this nature – this would add additional burdens on ratepayers, many of whom are already disgruntled. Lots of these proposals presented as making the central city more accessible actually do the opposite for people with disabilities - e.g. no longer having the footpath on George Street being raised above the road and the one way system seeing the removal of parks. My father is disabled and already struggles finding parks etc. when visiting George Street/the city centre; further projects of this nature will further deter him from shopping in town and being able to enjoy the main street. I live on George Street and that specific part does not need more bizarre traffic rules and restrictions. The new acute angle turn from Pitt Street into George Street heading north had worked well for the past 150 years until a few weeks ago! This does not even cover the fact that the proposals would constitute an eyesore.
