Weather update #5

An evacuation centre is now open in Mosgiel at the Taieri Bowling Club on Wickliffe Street for anyone who feels unsafe and are unable to go to family or friends for the night.

Water has risen rapidly in High Street since 10.30pm after a heavy deluge, causing significant surface flooding. MetService indicates that the heavy rain will peak around 2am.

Gordon Road is temporarily closed in central Mosgiel to prevent water washing into shops. It is important that people do not drive around the streets as this will push the flood waters through shops and potentially into houses.

The Dunedin City Emergency Management Operations Centre (EOC) controller Sandy Graham says the rain will undoubtably be causing people concern.

Family and friends should be the first port of call, she says.

“But the Taieri Bowling Club is a warm, dry place for anyone feeling they need support through the night. We will keep updating everyone as much as we can through social media and media channels, so please listen to the radio or keep an eye on your news website,” she says.

Sandbags have been filled and are available for anyone in need. The stations are at:

  • Mosgiel Memorial Park gym carpark, 187D Gordon Road, Mosgiel
  • Dunedin Ice Stadium carpark, 101 Victoria Road, Saint Kilda

Emergency services are on the ground along with DCC crews in Mosgiel, and if anyone has any risk to life or property please call 111. Check on your neighbours and share this information.

The Dunedin EOC is running throughout the night and the DCC call centre is open for anyone across the city in need of help, on 03 477 4000.
