Waste minimisation at events

Climate change is the biggest challenge facing communities across the world, including Dunedin. In June 2019, the Council voted to declare a climate emergency and speed up efforts to become a net zero carbon city - bringing forward Dunedin's target for achieving that goal by 20 years, to 2030.

To meet our Zero Carbon 2030 target, we need to cut carbon emissions.

Increasingly, Dunedin event organisers want to do the right thing when it comes to waste management by reducing overall waste and increasing the recycling and re-use of materials.

Simple pre-planning around waste reduction and minimisation could help your event achieve its goals and save costs. Take time to develop a clear understanding of the waste your event is likely to generate and work out what your waste reduction aspirations should be.

Waste Minimisation and Management at Events in Dunedin (PDF File, 4.9 MB | New window) is a guide for event organisers providing useful information for minimising and management of waste typical to your event. This guide will help you work out ways to reduce waste and send less to the landfill.

Working out your approach to waste minimisation and management early in the event planning stages will help. After reading the guide you can get further advice from the DCC Waste and Environmental Solutions team.

For large scale and major events, you could consider including the TIANZ sustainability pillars (New window) in the development of your event planning and implementation.
