Waste minimisation at events

Diverting more waste from landfill makes an important contribution to reducing Ōtepoti Dunedin’s carbon and methane emissions. Increasingly, Dunedin event organisers want to do the right thing when it comes to waste management by reducing overall waste and increasing the recycling and re-use of materials.

The Waste Management and Minimisation Plan 2025 (WMMP) sets a vision, objectives, targets and actions to improve waste minimisation over a six-year period. WMMP Action 7 is focused on improving waste minimisation at events.

Simple pre-planning around waste reduction and minimisation could help your event achieve its goals and save costs. Take time to develop a clear understanding of the waste your event is likely to generate and work out what your waste reduction aspirations should be.

The Event Minimisation and Management Guide provides practical steps for event organisers, to help minimise your event's waste and run cleaner, more sustainable events in Ōtepoti Dunedin. It outlines how to identify your event’s waste streams, set achievable waste reduction goals, work effectively with event stall holders, food vendors and attendees, and implement simple on-site systems that reduce contamination and landfill waste.

Working out your approach to waste minimisation and management early in the event planning stages will help. After reading the guide you can get further advice from the DCC Waste and Environmental Solutions team.

For large scale and major events, you could consider including the TIANZ sustainability pillars in the development of your event planning and implementation.
